ATHELTE SPOTLIGHT

April 2016

Pam Owen

1) How long have you been CrossFitting?

I have been doing CrossFit for 4 years.

2) What's your favorite movement? Least favorite?

I love to Clean. I hate Burpees.

3) So, how's CrossFit going for you?

CrossFit, for me, is going amazingly well. 4 years ago I started having knee issues and was told I would eventually need knee replacements. My surgeon told me I needed to do something that would increase my quad muscles. So with the aid of leg braces, I was able to do CrossFit for 2 more years before my first replacement and then the other 9 months later. In between my surgeries I continued to CrossFit as part of my physical therapy. CrossFit helped me physically, but more so mentally during my recovery.

4) Tell us something interesting or otherwise entertaining about yourself? Do you have a special talent?

I don’t know if I would call this a special talent, but I never meet a stranger.

5) Top three cheat meals?

Pizza, Macaroni and Cheese and pasta Alfredo.

6) Number one goal as related to fitness?

I would say my fitness now is stronger than ever and I’m getting PR’s I never dreamed of in the past. And to the physical therapist who said I should take up swimming because she didn’t think I would be able to do CrossFit, come and see me now! Anyone can do anything when you put your mind to it!

7) Beach, mountains or plains?

Easy question. The Beach.

8) Tell us something on your Bucket List?

To go to New York City.

9) You're going on a cross-country backpacking trek, what notorious person (dead or alive) are you taking along with you?

If I was going cross country backpacking, I would take my husband David. He would definitely keep me entertained.

10) One word that currently encapsulates your fitness mindset...

Determined.

From the Coaches:

Pam is one of the hardest working people in this gym. She inspires us on the reg- a constant smiley reminder of what solid determination and positive mindset can accomplish. Aside from being an awesome athlete, Pam is also a super fit Grandma (We know! It’s crazy!). Does your Grandma have traps like Pam’s? Prolly not. J It’s ok. Not all Grandma’s can be as cool as Pam.

We feel really lucky to have her here. Like, really lucky. She brings a level of work ethic that is both contagious and motivating. We look forward to watching her achieve more than her surgeon ever thought possible.  ;)  Thanks for being a part of our Family, Pam!

We love Josh! Typically, when folks first join CrossFit, there is a breaking-in period, a getting comfy with the group, the routine, etc. With Josh, he (and his very awesome girl, Briana) were all-in from the start!

Josh works very hard and seldom misses class. He even muscled his way through 16.4 with stitches still in his shin! Very badass.

We enjoy watching him grow as an athlete and look forward to witnessing all the amazing things he WILL accomplish!

Keep it up, Josh! Greatness Lives in You!

One word to encapsulate my fitness mindset might be, anti-obesity.  I love being active and competitive, CrossFit is my stress relief, my "I can do anything," and it’s my happy place.

From the Coaches:

Ninja is very special to us. She and G-Dub walked in during the very early stages of BangBANG’s Big Gym renovation. It didn’t look much like a place to CrossFit, but they believed in us, in our vision.

Something we really love about Ninja is her ability to Grind. It. Out. She works very, VERY hard. Head down, do work. Plus she’s pretty stinking strong!

She’s also has many hidden talents including (but not limited to):

Jack-O-Lantern Carving

Delicious Taco Salad Making

Fantastic Costume Designer

General Cuteness

<- Euphonium :)

ATHELTE SPOTLIGHT

December 2015

Chrystie Cole

Age: 42

1) How long have you been CrossFitting?

Approximately 5 weeks, which is just as long as I’ve been eating crow since I told my husband that I would NEVER do Crossfit. I was kind of a jerk to him about it too. But now I love it - even though it makes me mad some days. And he’s so sweet to have never said “I told you so."

2) What's your favorite movement? Least favorite?

My least favorite is overhead squats. It used to be running until Daniel made me do it every. single. day. Then it was burpees. But now it is definitely OH Squats. Or wall balls. Both suck equally. Choosing a favorite is hard - it depends on if I feel like I did well or poorly on it. I really like the snatch, even though it’s complex and has a lot of things to remember and I am not great at it. It just feels powerful.

3) So, how's CrossFit going for you?

I love it. I’m a thinker/nerd - so it challenges me to learn new movements, skills - but it also pushes me physically beyond anything I’ve ever done before. I never would have thought I could do anything close to the things the coaches have helped me accomplish. I love that it is always something new every day. I love the encouraging environment, the coaches, the community. It’s all good!

4) Tell us something interesting or otherwise entertaining about yourself? Do you have a special talent?

Hmm… I was once a witness to a drive by shooting. Scared the crap out of me. As far as talents go - nothing special. I can probably belch louder than most men though.

5) Top three cheat meals?

Macaroni and cheese, Bread Pudding, Chick-Fil-A Chicken Biscuits.

6) Number one goal as related to fitness?

Consistency. I’ve never been a regular exerciser…Physical fitness has always been a struggle for me.

7) Dogs, cats or alpacas?

All of the above, plus baby goats and baby donkeys. But Ken won’t let me have any of those - so dogs.

8) Tell us something you've always wanted to do?

I want to go to Europe and explore - my Grandmother was a British war bride, so I would LOVE to go explore there. But really anywhere in Europe - England, France, Germany, Italy, Austria. I’m fascinated by the old world cultures.

9) You're going on a cross-country backpacking trek, what notorious person (dead or alive) are you taking along with you?

Definitely my husband. I know that he could get us out of any jam and he takes good care of me- even though I hate backpacking and I am not fun to be around when we go. Remind me to tell you about our 40 mile trek through the Grand Canyon that include three miles of near death experience. It’s a good one - and we’re still married, which is a miracle.

10) One word that currently encapsulates your fitness mindset…

Overcoming

From the Coaches…

Once in a while the skies open, thunder claps and a unicorn gives birth to perfectly horned triplets. Chrystie is one of these unicorn babies—amazing and magical and SO talented. We love her for her natural ability as much as we love her for her kindness and grinder work ethic. Seldom does life bring such wonderful gifts. We look forward to watching her rise.

Keep killing it, Chrystie!

November 2015

Chris Campion AKA “The Vanilla Gorilla”

Age: 22

1) How long have you been CrossFitting?

This is my 1st month back in the game after doing it for three months about two years ago. It's a night and day difference this go around and I'm in a lot better place than I was two years ago.

2) What's your favorite movement? Least favorite?

Squat is my favorite, it's just so simple and I'm able to really throw on the weight. My least favorite is probably the clean, only because I find myself trying to break bad habits I've built up over the years.

3) So, how's CrossFit going for you?

Very well! I've lost 15 lbs. since I started, gained an unprecedented amount of mobility, no longer have back spasms, and I have a level of confidenceI build in the gym that overflows into other aspects of my life.

4) Tell us something interesting or otherwise entertaining about yourself? Do you have a special talent?

I'm an amazing dancer when I acquire some liquid courage. Over the weekend I went to downtown Clemson and was tearing up the dance floor, some girls that in my mind our WAAAAAYYYYY out of my league approached me to dance with me. Even though I'm the fittest and strongest I've been in my life, I completely dropped the ball because I was so nervous. I guess as far a special talents, I would say writing. I've written a few pieces published in college and I've actually outlined a novel. I guess the only thing I need to do is find time to write it.

5) Top three cheat meals?

1.) Pizza 2.) Ice Cream 3.) Waffle House

6) Number one goal as related to fitness?

Win the scaled division at The Greenville Games. To me right now nothing takes precedence over that. I have great coaches and a teammate who is just as driven as me. I know what it takes to win and I'm doing everything possible to set myself up for it.

7) Dogs, cats or alpacas?

Much Doges.

8) Tell us something you've always wanted to do?

I really want to travel Europe, there's something about the Old World that I love.

9) You're going on a cross-country backpacking trek, what notorious person (dead or alive) are you taking along with you?

Probably Julius Caesar. The ambition, charisma, and vision he possessed is fascinating to me

10) One word that currently encapsulates your fitness mindset

Achieve.

From the Coaches…

From Chris’ first day at BangBANG, we KNEW WITHOUT A DOUBT what kind of monster we we’re getting the good fortune of unleashing. Chris is highly driven, hard-working and a seriously good dancer. He never gives us less than his highest and best intensity and is improving at a rate reserved for elite athletes.  We see his GREATNESS and are honored that he would call BangBANG home.

Thanks for riding with us, Chris!
